Shop Mural Project

Latex paint

-how do you create an inspirational environment that has richness and intensity in a space that has no windows, and is forty feet below ground? This is what I asked myself when I conceived of this mural project.

“This way, to our future”

Oil on Board, 14x14”

-I wanted to paint an image of a dystopian future where penguins wander lost through a garbage filled forest and no ice in sight.

“Bear poses”

Oil on board 24x24”

-my paintings tend to comment on the condition of nature and how we view it. We consider animals majestic when viewed at a distance, yet in proximity they become life threatening. In a fight we have no chance, yet we have managed to impose ourselves on them much more dramatically. Each bear takes on a scary pose frozen like taxidermy. Are they alive, a trophy, scary, or are they afraid of us?

“Bear and Fish”

Oil on board

-continuing the theme of how we view nature, I simply wanted to create humor in a time of carnage. The fish becomes food, the bear fertilizes the forest with the carcass, a positive loving relationship. They stop to pose, acknowledging what is transpiring.

“Kelley & Olivia”

Oil on paper

-How does one begin to capture the true character of such complex beings? Simply by adding wallpaper as a backdrop.

Monotypes

Intaglio, wood block reduction and found object techniques on paper. 24x36”.

-while living in the town of Jonkoping, Sweden I found a printmaking community that had an old printing press. I happened to arrive right after September 11th which had a profound effect on my narrative as an American living abroad. Each print imitates the American flag while telling the story of the tragic event. I have always been fascinated with identity, how we think of ourselves, while others perceptions may be entirely different. The series were accepted in the Jonkopings Lans Museum Biennial that year.

Graduate Thesis Project

Dioramas, 14x14”

-for my senior thesis project I shifted away from printmaking and created a series of dioramas. Based very loosely from Dante’s trilogy, I tell the story of the search for my identity. Having returned from a years study in Italy, I was influenced heavily by Italian motifs. While visiting countless historical sights, I always wondered what the missing heads of antiquity sculpture would resemble. Would it be a reflection of myself, passed on from countless generations? Are we the same, and if I was preserved in time, how would people view me in the future? This was my journey.
